OUR STORY

WHAT IS OLD CAZ?

Our brewery’s name comes from Old Cazadero Road, an overgrown and downright Jurassic path that connects the Northern California towns of Guerneville and Cazadero. 

These were old logging spots in the late 1800s and the area still retains plenty of the wild, pioneering character that has long since vanished from much of Sonoma County.

Although most of Old Cazadero Road is no longer a drivable thoroughfare, its viciously steep and winding terrain has become a prized destination for cyclists of all disciplines and quickly became one of our favorite roads to explore. 

From its dark and densely wooded stretches to expansive ridgetop views, Old Caz has always been a mythical place to us and represents everything we love about Sonoma County.

HOW WE ENDED UP HERE.

Old Caz Beer was founded in 2018 by Tom Edwards and Bryan Rengel, who met in 2007 while attending  Sonoma State University. 

As teammates on the SSU Rowing Team, much of their relationship involved getting abysmally small amounts of sleep and grunting at each other as they rowed up and down the Petaluma River in the predawn hours. 

No one told them this was actually amazing practice for starting a business and the relationship which formed became a strong foundation to deal with the startup struggles that came fast and hard as the brewery began. 

Despite starting Old Caz with a fraction of the recommended funds, they managed to sidestep the hefty brewery startup costs by sourcing almost every piece of equipment from auctions and the ‘free’ section of Craigslist. 

Most of these items weren’t functioning and oftentimes cut into pieces, but through creative determination and a ton of hard work they were able to slowly cobble together a fully operational brewery that continues to crank out thousands of barrels each year. 

This resourcefulness and hands-on effort has shaped Old Caz into what it is today—a multi-location, award-winning brewery with amazing people and supporters.

At Old Caz, our mission is simple: to create high quality, exciting products that bring people of all tastes and preferences together. 

The defining quality we pursue with everything we make is drinkability and we pride ourselves on crafting beers that are bold yet approachable—perfect for sharing stories, laughter, and memories.

We believe that a brewery can be far more than a place that simply makes beer. We’re passionate about community, connection, and celebrating the little moments that make life worth living.
